Sidney or Sydney?

Filed under: Random — jsf @ 1:47 pm

This has gotta be annoying… typo takes tourist 13,000km out.

A 21-year-old German tourist who wanted to visit his girlfriend in the Australian metropolis Sydney landed 13,000 kilometers (8,077 miles) away near Sidney, Montana, after mistyping his destination on a flight booking Web site.

Ouch.

Ahhh, sweet sweet Friday. Have a happy New Year, y’all.

Working on Boxing Day felt kinda weird..

Filed under: Random — jsf @ 2:35 pm

.. I was supposed to be sitting at home eating leftover ham and playing with new toys or relaxing at the beach or something.

Had a good week before Christmas up in Tahoe (photos here) with Rob, Art, Monty and others. A few days of hard-and-fast, with one nice 8″ bluebird pow day in the middle to mix it up a bit. Just enough to hide the rocks .. fun riding through the trees, once the board-damage angst was overcome.

Christmas day was spent with Rob, opening presents and then traveling back to San Jose from Tahoe, via a few touristy things in San Francisco. Christmas dinner was cioppino down at Fishermans Wharf. Don’t think I’ll ever do a Christmas quite like that again. :)

Two more days of work then up to Seattle for New Years on Friday evening. Excellent…

No wonder some people here have a debt problem

Filed under: Random — jsf @ 11:25 pm

Got back to San Jose late last night (after a six hour delay at Seattle airport, sigh) and sorted through the mail that has accumulated for me in the 6 weeks that I’ve been away. A few real letters (and wedding invitations!) but the highlight was definitely the fourteen - yes, fourteen - different credit card offers.  Wow.

Spent this morning reorganising my life and then got in the car and drove to Tahoe.  Cold, but dry .. not much snow here yet.  Oh well, should still be a nice relaxing week.

I’m an abnormal design reject

Filed under: Random — jsf @ 3:58 pm

Two of my favorite NZ news sites .. www.stuff.co.nz and www.nzherald.co.nz .. have gone all stupid and Web2.0-curvy-pastel-tabbed-alicious. Yuck.

Bring back the old square designs, I say (and bring back Buck while you’re at it). Ninety degrees has got more steez. Less is more (I realise this is an odd one to quote, given how keen certain proponents of Web2.0 are on it .. but they’re talking about web applications, not news “portals”). Show me what I need to know, when and where I need to know it. All that jazz.

Ah well, back to news.google.co.nz it is.

What kind of crack was this guy smoking?

Woah! MySpace members have more secure passwords than your standard corporate flunky. Maybe that place ain’t so bad after all.

Stevens Pass .. another ticked off the list

Filed under: Random — jsf @ 9:50 pm

Looking at this photo, it’d be hard to believe the perma-grin that I’ve got going on from todays riding. Made it up to Stevens Pass with this crew. It was clagged in for most of the day - with light snowfall (or icefall) a lot of the time - but awesome company, some good riding, and a new deck (164 version of this) made for a fun day.

Here’s the kicker though.. sitting back in NZ, I used to spend some time most months flicking through snowboarding magazines. And for some reason, one particular type of photo has always stood out to me .. the lone rider appearing out of a cloud-shrouded stand of trees and dropping into a line that is just pillow after pillow of accumulated pow. The best examples I can find at the moment are this and this. Today, I got my first chance to ride the pillows myself. So very very good. Obviously I don’t make it look this classy but hey, let’s not complain.

This Saturday was a lot better than work deadlines were threatening to make it. One more week in Seattle… the place has definitely grown on me.

Crystal Mountain is pretty good too

Filed under: Random — jsf @ 6:22 pm

Somehow the dude in yellow snuck into my photo. Oh well, I’m all for one-pieces. Nice steep terrain, and big wide groomers for charging as well. Amazing views of Rainier and surrounding mountains .. that’s Mount St Helens (I think) in the distance on the right. A few more pics here.

These mountains are great, but I do miss my riding crew from back home… not so easy to get amped by yourself. Plus, I get tired when I don’t have excuses to stop all the time! :-P

Off to church now. One benefit of having mountains so close .. you can do both.

Mount Baker is gold!

Filed under: Random — jsf @ 12:08 am

Great place.  Got up at 5.30am today and drove for 2.5 hours to get there just before the lifts started turning.

Awesome day.  Packed pow on trail, tracked pow off with some pockets of untracked.  The steeps were the winner of the morning, and tree runs the winner of the afternoon.  Amazing mountain with a great relaxed vibe .. very different to Mammoth last weekend.  The backcountry looks oh-so-very-tempting but considering my lack of gear (transceiver/probe/shovel) and trusted buddies to ride with, I passed.

They’ve got a huge amount of snow at the moment, considering it’s still early season.  Pics here.
